Three ways to rename a sheet

Rename a worksheet
Double-click the sheet tab
The tab name becomes editable and is highlighted.
Type the new name
Type over the highlighted text. Excel replaces the old name.
Press Enter
Press Enter (or click elsewhere) to confirm. Press Esc to cancel.
Alt + H, then O, then R on Windows to jump straight to the Rename command.What Excel won't let you name a sheet
When a rename is rejected, it is usually one of these rules:

| Length | Maximum 31 characters |
| Forbidden characters | \\ / ? * [ ] : |
| No blank name | A sheet name cannot be empty |
| Unique names | Two sheets in the same workbook can't share a name |
Common problems & fixes
"That name is already taken"
Another sheet in the same workbook already uses that name. Choose a different name or rename the other sheet first.
Can't edit the tab / Rename is grayed out
The workbook structure is protected. Go to Review → Unprotect Workbook. See the Unprotect Worksheet guide.
Mac users
Double-click the sheet tab, or go to the Format menu → Sheet → Rename.
