The Water Cycle

📖 Reading Passage

Water on Earth is always moving. This movement is called the water cycle. The sun heats water in rivers, lakes, and oceans. The water turns into vapor and rises into the air. This is called evaporation.

As the vapor goes higher, it cools down and turns into tiny water drops. This is called condensation. The drops form clouds.

When the clouds get heavy, the water falls back to Earth as rain or snow. This is called precipitation. The water collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the cycle starts again.

The water cycle never stops — the same water has been cycling on Earth for billions of years. The water you drink today might have once been part of a dinosaur, a glacier, or an ancient ocean.

❓ Comprehension Questions

2. What is it called when water turns into vapor and rises?
3. What happens to water vapor when it goes higher and cools?
4. Name two forms of precipitation.
5. Where does water collect after precipitation?
6. Put in order: precipitation · evaporation · condensation

This free printable water cycle worksheet is designed for students in Grades 2–4 who are beginning to learn about Earth's systems. It covers all four stages — evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection — through an engaging grade-level reading passage followed by six comprehension questions that check understanding. Students will also sequence the stages in the correct order and match key vocabulary terms to their definitions. An answer key is included so students can self-check their work or teachers can grade quickly. The worksheet is ready to print on US Letter or A4 paper with no additional preparation required.

How Teachers Can Use This Worksheet

How Parents and Homeschoolers Can Use This Worksheet

Read the passage aloud with your child before they attempt the questions. Pause after each paragraph and ask a quick comprehension check — for example, after the paragraph about evaporation, ask "So what makes the water turn into vapor?" This builds active listening skills and ensures they understand before moving on. After completing the worksheet, try a simple hands-on experiment to reinforce the lesson: place a cup of water on a sunny windowsill, mark the water level with tape, and check it daily. Ask your child to identify which stage of the water cycle they are observing. For an extension activity, have your child draw and label their own water cycle diagram on a blank piece of paper.

Common Core / NGSS Alignment

This worksheet supports CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1 (ask and answer questions about key details in a text) and NGSS 2-ESS2-3 (obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth).

Skills Covered

scientific observation · vocabulary · classification · understanding concepts · critical thinking
