States of Matter — Solid, Liquid & Gas

📖 Reading Passage

Everything around you is made of matter. Matter comes in three forms. A solid keeps its shape — like a rock or a table. A liquid takes the shape of its container — like water and juice. A gas spreads out to fill all the space — like the air we breathe. You can change matter by heating or cooling it. Freeze water → solid. Boil water → gas (steam).

❓ Comprehension Questions

1. What are the three states of matter?
2. Does a solid keep its own shape?
3. Give one example of a liquid.
4. What happens when you freeze water?
5. Is air a solid, liquid, or gas?
6. Circle the solid: milk, chair, smoke

About This States of Matter Worksheet

This free printable states of matter worksheet is designed for students in Grades 2–4 who are learning about solids, liquids, and gases. Through sorting activities, property identification, and real-world examples, students explore the key differences between the three states. The worksheet also introduces how heating and cooling can cause matter to change from one state to another — melting, freezing, boiling, and condensing. A complete answer key is included. Print-ready on US Letter or A4 paper.

Learning Objectives

By completing this worksheet, students will be able to:

How Teachers Can Use This Worksheet

How Parents and Homeschoolers Can Use This Worksheet

Before handing your child the worksheet, walk around your kitchen together and find one example of each state of matter — an ice cube (solid), water from the tap (liquid), and steam rising from a hot drink (gas). Talk about what makes each one different. Then complete the worksheet together. Afterward, try a simple experiment: freeze juice into ice pops (liquid to solid), then let one melt on the counter (solid to liquid). Ask your child to identify which change is melting and which is freezing. This hands-on activity reinforces the concept far better than the worksheet alone.

Common Core / NGSS Alignment

This worksheet supports NGSS 2-PS1-1 (plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties) and NGSS 2-PS1-4 (construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot).
